Medicine Buddha Mandala
Invoking Buddha of Healing Physical and Mental Impurities
Medicine Buddha Mandala depicts Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, or the Medicine Buddha. The Medicine Buddha is referred to as the “master of remedies,” the “doctor of soul and bodies,” and “the sage and knowing doctor of the sufferings of this world.”
At its heart lies Medicine Buddha Syllable Mantra, radiating serene empathy that reaches all sentient beings. The mantra of Medicine Buddha is Tadyatha Om Bhaishajye Bhaishajye Maha Bhaishajye Raja Samudgate Svaha. This mantra invokes the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru), calling on his healing powers to cure physical and spiritual illnesses and bring well-being to all sentient beings.
By creating the Medicine Buddha Mandala, the artist allows oneself and all others to become filled with loving- kindness and compassion. The artist lays the sacred geometry to place the central deity with its three dimensional palace, which is then surrounded by rings of lotus, vajra and flames. The diagram allows the artist or the practitioner the opportunity to travel from the samsaric world to the celestial space of the deity, to become one with the deity of the Mandala and cultivate its attributes.
This mandala serves as both a meditative gateway and a visual invocation of the deep, healing embrace of compassion. The Medicine Buddha Mandala is a sacred diagram of healing and restoration. At its luminous core sits the Medicine Buddha, deep blue in hue, radiating a calm that dissolves both physical and spiritual ailments. Engaging with this mandala invites the artist or practitioner to invoke the healing light within and share it outward, aligning with the ultimate goal of harmony and wellbeing for all beings.
Medicine Buddha or the Healing Buddha, acknowledged as Bhaiajyaguru, indicates that he is the master of medicines and 'doctor of souls and bodies.' Identical to Buddha Sa-kya-muni, he has the ushnisa on the top of his head exemplifying his spiritual power, is clad in a monastic robe and is seated in Padmasana. Bhaiajyaguru is symbolic of the healing facet of Buddha Sa-kya-muni in Mahayana Buddhism. Medicine Buddha is always portrayed in a profound lapis lazuli blue, with his left hand positioned in the mediation mudra holding a medicine bowl, while his right hand is placed on the right knee clasping a stem or fruit of the myrobalan plant (a medicinal plant found in India).
