Avalokiteshvara Mandala
Invoking Buddha of Compasssion
Avalokiteshvara Mandala depicts the Bodhisattva of Compassion. At its heart lies Avalokiteshvara Syllable Mantra, radiating serene empathy that reaches all sentient beings. The mantra of Avalokiteshwara is Om Mani Padme Hum. This mantra embodies the compassion of Avalokiteshvara, and purifies the mind, cultivates love and compassion, and removes suffering.
By creating the Avalokiteshvara Mandala, the artist allows oneself and all others to become filled with loving- kindness and compassion. The artist lays the sacred geometry to place the central deity with its three dimensional palace, which is then surrounded by rings of lotus, vajra and flames. The diagram allows the artist or the practitioner the opportunity to travel from the samsaric world to the celestial space of the deity, to become one with the deity of the Mandala and cultivate its attributes.
This mandala serves as both a meditative gateway and a visual invocation of the deep, healing embrace of compassion that Avalokiteshwara offers the world. In Tibet and most other Himalayan regions, Avalokiteshvara is associated with the Dalai Lamas and the Dalai Lama is believed to be the emanation of Avalokiteshvara.
Avalokiteśvara (Chenrezig in Tibetan Buddhism), is recognized as the earthly expression of the eternal Buddha, Amitabha, who is occasionally featured in his headdress. The deity is usually depicted with four arms, often depicted holding a white lotus signifying his insight into the nature of emptiness and the eternal gem of Bodhichitta, the intellect of enlightenment. The color of his body is white and he is represented in the seated lotus position with four arms.
